www.texasequineva.com • 19 PLATINUM PRACTICE TEXAS EQUINE HOSPITAL Spotlight Set on 21 acres in Bryan, Texas, Texas Equine Hospital was founded on January 1, 2009, by Dr. Cliff Honnas. Specializing in sports medicine and surgery, the practice offers a full range of veterinary care including general care, surgery, dentistry, reproductive services, ophthalmology, podiatry and chiropractic medicine. The clinic is run by four veterinarians, Dr. Honnas, Dr. Nathan Canada, Dr. Francisco Alvarez, and Dr. Lauren Underwood. It also has active internship and externship programs. The sports medicine department features stationary and dynamic video endoscopy, video gastroscopy, ultrasonography, and digital radiology. The hospital has a fully equipped surgery suite, three recovery rooms, five exam rooms, diagnostic imaging and exam rooms, a pharmacy, lab, and a conference/surgery viewing room. There is also a full indoor area dedicated to farrier services. The general practice department provides standard, routine veterinary services both at the clinic and ambulatory care within a 65-mile radius. The surgery department specializes in orthopedic procedures such as arthroscopies, fracture fixations, arthrodesis techniques, as well as dental, upper respiratory, abdominal, and reproductive procedures. The reproduction department provides in-house and ambulatory theriogenology. Services offered include estrous cycle monitoring, ovulation timing, pregnancy diagnosis, and a variety of diagnostics to evaluate fertility. Uterine ultrasound, culture, cytology, and biopsy are available. Assisted reproductive techniques such as artificial insemination is also offered. The ophthalmology department treats and advises on a number of ocular disorders including injuries, corneal ulcerations, recurrent uveitis, and glaucoma. Specialty appointments or consultations with board certified ophthalmologists are available through the clinic as well. Dr. Honnas is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. He received his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 1984 from Colorado State University, and subsequently completed a one- year internship in Large Animal Medicine and Surgery at Texas A&M University, followed by a three-year residency in equine surgery at the University of California—Davis, California. In 1988, he relocated to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he taught equine surgery at Louisiana State University. While at LSU, he became board certified in equine surgery. In 1989, he and his family moved to College Station, Texas, to work at Texas A&M University as an Equine Orthopedic Surgeon. Dr. Honnas practiced at Texas A&M University for 19 years and was a tenured full professor. In addition to founding Texas Equine Hospital, he continues to have an active consulting practice throughout the state of Texas. Dr. Canada attended Oklahoma State University, Center for Veterinary Health Sciences and received his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2011. After graduating, he completed a one year internship at Peterson and Smith Equine Hospital in Ocala, Florida. He then traveled to Kansas State University's Veterinary Health Center for an additional year of training. During this time, he was selected to enter the equine surgery residency program at Kansas State University. He completed his residency in July of 2016 and received his master's degree in Veterinary Biomedical Sciences. He obtained diplomate status by passing all parts of the ACVS certification examination in February 2017.
