www.texasequineva.com • 5 MESSAGE FROM THE Point Howdy TEVA members, and welcome to the Fall Edition of The Remuda in this remarkable year of 2020! As we settle into the season of shorter days, football (finally!) and cooling weather, how different 2020 continues to be. Where we are now appears to be the "new normal" going forward, at least for a while! Let me begin by saying that I hope each of you are healthy and relatively busy in your practice or profession. By now, many of us have been impacted - directly or at least closely - by Covid–19 in some way, and I hope this season finds you and yours healthy and safe. Let us all continue to take the necessary precautions – for our own sake as well as others – until we can get ahead of this thing! On the brighter side, many of you have been quite busy through the summer months as horse owners were able to get back into competition and horses started moving again. Breeding season didn't seem to slow at all, horse sales have been strong and highly energized, and the clinics I have been in touch with report "really busy" to "covered-up!" From an industry perspective, all phases of veterinary medicine, including companion animal clinics, mixed clinics and straight equine practices seem to be busy, which is good for everyone, including your clients! It's an understatement to say we missed a lot this year. In our world, canceled events, meetings going "virtual" and Zoom gatherings have become the norm. In that regard, the decision to cancel the annual TEVA Summer Conference in August was not an easy one for the TEVA leadership, but in hindsight, it was the right decision on so many levels. I missed not being at TEVA this year, and I'm sure many of you did too! CE hours and education aside, we all missed the chance to see friends and visit with the people we see too infrequently. And I'm sure, like me, you missed the "spirit" of TEVA that's always present at that meeting…there's a certain camaraderie there that sets the TEVA meeting apart from others! With no TEVA Summer Symposium this year, we also missed the chance to hold the Annual TEVA Foundation Gala on Friday night! The Foundation Gala is not only a great chance to socialize and enjoy a meal with friends, along with some dancing and merriment, but The Gala is also the primary fundraiser for the TEVA Foundation, your foundation which has helped so many practitioners, students and horses in Texas and beyond our borders! With your generosity over the past several years, the auction events held during the TEVA Foundation Gala have historically provided much of the necessary funds to allow the TEVA Foundation to be the "action arm" of TEVA. Since its inception in 2017, shortly before the onset of Hurricane Harvey, the TEVA Foundation has awarded some $300,000 in funding for disaster relief for feed, hay and emergency supplies, and sponsors significant scholarships for veterinary students, research and more. The TEVA Foundation has also provided much-needed funds for the Equine Disease Communications Center (EDCC.org), the Equitarian Project and more. I would invite you to stop and look at the list when you get to pages 18 of this issue of The Remuda. The work done through the TEVA Foundation is quite impressive. But we can't continue without your help! So...we are asking politely, reminding you and encouraging you to take a moment to contribute to the TEVA Foundation. On behalf of the TEVA Foundation Board of Directors, we want the Foundation to be able to continue the good work being done, and to be ready when assistance is needed. We look forward to seeing all of you at the TEVA Summer Conference in 2021! Be safe and best regards! Pete Hale TEVA FOUNDATION PRESIDENT
