THURSDAY LECTURE 103: PRACTICAL ASPECTS OF SPERM CRYOPRESERVATION IN STALLIONS SPEAKER: Camilo Hernandez-Aviles, DVM, PhD To date, sperm cryopreservation is the only technique that can be used for long-term storage of stallion semen. While this technique has been adapted from that described in other species and has evolved in the last 20 years, the utilization of cryopreserved stallion sperm is less than that for fresh or cool- stored stallion semen. In this lecture, clinically applicable concepts regarding sperm damage due to cryopreservation, factors that impact the post-thaw quality of frozen/thawed sperm (including the effect of semen extenders and cryopreservation methods), and concepts regarding analysis and interpretation of post-thaw sperm quality in stallions will be discussed. 3:10PM—4:00PM Location: Pecos 1 CEU: 1 LECTURE 104: USE OF FROZEN/THAWED SPERM FOR ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION (AI) AND INTRACYTOPLASMIC SPERM INJECTION (ICSI) IN MARES SPEAKER: Camilo Hernandez-Aviles, DVM, PhD The use of frozen/thawed sperm for artificial insemination (AI) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) in the mare has grown exponentially in the last 20 years, particularly when using sperm from stallions that are either in competition/show schedule, overseas, or aged/deceased individuals. This lecture will discuss current concepts in the breeding management of mares for AI with frozen/thawed sperm, including ovulation synchronization and insemination timing, post-breeding management of the mare, and some factors that may affect the efficiency of ICSI when utilizing frozen/thawed sperm. 4:10PM—5:00PM Location: Pecos 1 CEU: 1 THURSDAY AUGUST 1 5:30PM—7:00PM WELCOME RECEPTION, EVERYONE IS INVITED!
