MIKE MARTIN, DVM MIKE MARTIN, DVM Dr. Martin graduated from Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine in 1993 and is the former owner of Retama Equine Hospital and Cibolo Small Animal Hospital. He is a former commissioner of the Texas Racing Commission, a past president of the Texas Equine Veterinary Association and the Texas Equine Foundation. Today he continues to be active in the Texas Equine Foundation where we serves as an advisor. MARTIN MARTIN PIPER NORTON, DVM, DACVIM-LA PIPER NORTON, DVM, DACVIM-LA Dr. Piper Norton is a board-certified equine internal medicine specialist located in the Austin, TX area. Originally from Louisiana, she graduated from Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2007. She was awarded the 2007 Equine Clinical Proficiency award and the 2007 Outstanding Senior Veterinary Student award from the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine. In addition, she was awarded one of the 12 campus-wide 2007 LSU Tiger Twelve awards from LSU for her contributions to community service in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. In 2010, Dr. Norton wanted to further her education and was accepted into a large animal internal medicine residency program at Texas A&M University. During the 3-year program, she pursued research on foal immunity and was awarded the 2012 and 2013 TVMF Earl Waldell NORTON NORTON Memorial Award, the 2013 TVMF Auxiliary Clinical Resident Award, and the 2013 SCAAEP Teaching Award. As neonatal foal medicine is a passion of hers, Dr. Norton also spent a month in Australia in 2012 at Scone Equine Hospital. In Australia, Scone Equine Hospital is the leading neonatal foal hospital in the country. Dr. Norton practiced at Elgin Veterinary Hospital for 7 years prior to pursuing her passion to begin her own mobile specialty practice, Texas Equine Medical Associates. Dr. Norton's specialty includes neonatology, gastroenterology, nephrology, urology, pulmonology, neurology, oncology, and cardiology. She also has a passion for determining the etiology of Equine Nasopharyngeal Cicatrix in this region. In addition to her daily practice, Dr. Norton also serves on the Board of Directors of the Texas Equine Veterinary Association and is the 2024 President of TEVA. She served on the Infectious Disease Committee for the American Association of Equine Practitioners and was the past the editor of TEVA's educational veterinary journal, The Remuda. SHEM OLIVER, DVM, DACVS SHEM OLIVER, DVM, DACVS Dr. Shem Oliver is a veterinarian and board certified surgeon (Diplomate American College of Veterinary Surgeons) at Performance Equine Associates in Thackerville, OK. Dr. Oliver's primary interests are orthopedic and soft tissue surgery, sports medicine, and diagnostic imaging of the performance horse. Dr. Oliver was raised on a cattle and horse ranch, in Eastern NM, near Fort Sumner. After graduating high school, he attended Oklahoma State University where he earned both a Bachelors in Animal Science and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. After graduation from veterinary school in 2010, Dr Oliver accepted an internship at Oakridge Equine in Edmond, OK, OLIVER OLIVER where he trained under Drs. Mike Major and Brent Hague. In 2011, he entered a 3 year large animal surgery residency at Texas A&M University under the mentorship of Dr. Jeff Watkins and many other great surgeons. Outside of work, Dr. Oliver enjoys spending time with his family. His wife Lauren, who is originally from Ardmore, teaches at Plainview Elementary. Together they have 2 daughters, Emma and Reese. Dr. Oliver also enjoys hunting, fly-fishing, golfing, skiing, and rooting for Oklahoma State sports teams. 54 | SPEAKERS
