THURSDAY LECTURE 102: METHODS OF PROCESSING SEMEN FOR ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION OF MARES WITH FRESH OR COOL-STORED SEMEN SPEAKER: Dickson Varner, DVM, MS, DACT This lecture will be directed at methods for handling and processing semen to maximize semen quality at the time of insemination for both fresh and cooled semen. Emphasis will be given to cushioned centrifugation techniques to reduce seminal plasma concentration and increase sperm concentration in inseminates. Attention will also be given to centrifugal fractionation techniques to enhance semen quality prior to insemination. In addition, the lecture will cover methods for collecting and evaluating semen in an effort to ascertain with confidence the projected fertility of stallions.
