Check in at the NORTH END OF CATTLE BARN 1 7:00AM—8:00AM Location: Stagecoach Room CEU: 1 LECTURE 115: OPERATIONS EAT CULTURE FOR BREAKFAST SPEAKER: Joe Pluhar, DVM, MBA Ok, I'll admit, the title is a little inflammatory. But it got your attention. Of course, culture is vitally important to the short- and long-term success of any organization. However, equally important are operations. I'll go a step further, the chaos, dysfunction, and cost of poor processes and inefficiencies will erode even the best cultures. Without, at least, equal management focus aimed at operations compared to culture, the organization will flounder and eventually fail. 8:00AM—8:50AM LECTURE 116: CURRENT STATE OF STUDENT DEBT (shhh it's getting better) SPEAKER: Joe Pluhar, DVM, MBA All borrowers are technically back in repayment. The Biden administration launched the SAVE Plan in 2023, which is a new income driven repayment plan that will reduce the number of borrowers making payments starting February 2024. Location: Stagecoach Room CEU: 1 9:00AM—9:50AM Location: Stagecoach Room CEU: 1 11:00AM—11:50AM LECTURE 118: UPDATE ON MACROLIDE - AND RIFAMPIN-RESISTANT RHODOCOCUS EQUI - EPIDEMIOLOGY AND TREATMENT SPEAKER: Noah Cohen, VMD, MPH, PhD, DACVIM-LA The emergence of strains of R. equi that are resistant to macrolides and rifampin has caused concern because these strains have been associated with a poorer prognosis for survival. Moreover, resistant strains pose a therapeutic challenge because effective alternatives to macrolides are lacking. An update on the epidemiological findings and therapeutic options for these strains will be presented. WHAT SHOULD TREATING VETERINARIANS KNOW? SPEAKER: Jerry Black, DVM Veterinarians play an important role in the care of horses in competition. As medication policies and penalties evolve, it is important for veterinarians to know the guidelines for treating horses before and during performances. Location: Stagecoach Room CEU: 1 LECTURE 117: PASSIVE IMMUNIZATION AGAINST RHODOCOCCUS EQUI SPEAKER: Noah Cohen, VMD, MPH, PhD, DACVIM-LA In the absence of a vaccine, passive immunization remains the principal method for controlling and preventing R. equi pneumonia. An update on recommendations for passive immunization based on current knowledge and ongoing research for passive immunization will be presented. 10:00AM—10:50AM
